Alternative Fuelled Vehicles
It is easy to look with scepticism at the growth of Alternative Fuelled Vehicles (AFVs). Despite all the hype that the emergence of AFVs will reduce conventional oil use, the reality is that their numbers remain low in relative terms. Currently electric and natural gas fuelled vehicles account for only 1.5% of the global car fleet. Nevertheless, the AFV fleet is growing and in this, the latest edition of KBC's Global Energy Perspectives, we ask:
  • Will energy self-sufficiency and/or environmental mandates dictate the success of AFVs?
  • Is AFV proliferation geographic in nature?
  • Does the future belong to hybrids, gas-fuelled vehicles or biofuels?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of the panoply of AFVs being discussed?
  • How significant is the AFV trend in terms of overall fuel consumption?
  • Is the media hype on AFVs masking other threats?
On 1 November 2011, KBC released its latest executive briefing focusing on the growth market of Alternative Fuelled Vehicles. This 8-page perspective evaluates the changing dynamics and challenges facing the transportation industry and impact of APVs on the refining sector.
